About the Tawny Nurse Shark
The Tawny Nurse Shark (Nebrius ferrugineus) is a tropical Indo-Pacific shark belonging to the nurse shark family. It is recognisable by its broad head, small mouth and characteristic barbels near the nostrils.
Unlike the long, pointed cutting teeth seen in predatory sharks such as the Mako, Tawny Nurse Sharks have numerous smaller teeth adapted to their feeding behaviour. They feed primarily on bottom-dwelling prey such as octopus, crustaceans and fish.
The distinctive structure of this species' jaw and teeth makes it an interesting natural-history specimen as well as an unusual shark collectible.
